Our Umteenth Wing & Pizza Night Success

On February 27th, we held our 19th, 20th, 21st (we don't know exactly) Wing & Pizza Night fundraiser at the Scugog Community Centre, and let me tell you, we had a BLAST!

We honestly couldn't imagine a more delicious event in Scugog. I mean, we have TWELVE restaurants there serving up their BEST wings and pizza. Do you know how many wings and slices of pizza were eaten that night? I don't know either, but I'm going to guess around 5,000 wings, and about 400 slices of pizza. Yes, there was a lot of carbs in that room, but it was all worth it for our great cause!

Here were this years participants:
The Pub, Durham Homestyle Gourmet, Food Man,  Vos Independent,  Great Blue Heron Charity Casino, Harp & Wylies, Clem's Custom Wing Shop, Col. Mustards, Dominos, Bona Via Pizzeria, Crusty Pizza, & Jim's Pizza and Pasta

The winner of best pizza goes to: Crusty Pizza!!

The winner of best wings goes to: Harp & Wylie's!!

Congratulations to you both!!

We had over 350 guests--a fabulous turnout-- who enjoyed said wings and pizza, and who danced the night away to the sweet tunes Dj-ed by Mr. Todd Soomre (the best dj, in our opinion).

Don't worry, there was dessert too, to round out the nice buffet. We had mini, scrumptious cupcakes from Cakes by Stephanie, and just as many cookies from Asphalt Cookie Company, and we can honestly say not a single one was left! The dessert paired nicely with the coffee donated by Tim Horton's :)

There were over 90 (!!!) silent auction items, donated mostly by generous local businesses and friends of our organization, which generated over $5,000 for us! Thank you, lovely folk, for bidding high and often!

We had 1 very excited winner of our West Jet Raffle who plans on jetting off to New Brunswick to visit her brother-in-law, we hope you have a fabulous time with your FREE airfare!

Ohmygoodness, the amount of volunteers we had was truly crazy. I can honestly say that that night could NOT function without our volunteers, and so we are forever thankful to you, as you are a big part of our success!!

With everyone's help, we were able to raise over $17,000!!!

This night is our biggest of the year and we want to thank everyone for coming, donating, participating and supporting us as it's the children and youth in North Durham who truly benefit from your generosity!!!

If you'd like to see what this event is all about, we're hosting one in Uxbridge on April 30th, 2016 at the Uxbridge Community Centre! Click here for more details.

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

So we were recently perusing through Google images looking for Halloween costumes, so we thought we thought we would share some that would definitely nominate you for some costume prizes at our Halloween Spooktacular Party!

I've just recently started watching American Horror Story, so I thought this would be kinda cool, and easy-- all you need it some white sheets, white and black face paint!

Need a REALLY easy group costume? Why not be DOMINOS!

Dora's backpack may involve some creativity, but the rest of the costume is basic! I think even a plain purple backpack would do :)

I'm REALLY digging this group Troll costume. This could also be a single costume, or as many as you want, really! If you wanted to be punny, you could somehow make this into an internet troll!

I ALWAYS find sugar skulls very impressive!

I'm a sucker for anything Addams Family, so this Wednesday Addams costume is not only easy to pull off, but it's a classic!

And lastly, if you're in a pickle for a costume, you can always go as the Black Eyed Peas :)

Hope to see you at our Halloween Spooktacular Party! All proceeds benefit the children/youth in North Durham!
Please note this is a 19+ event.

5 Ways You Can Get Involved with US!

Have you thought about getting involved with but you don't know if mentoring is for you? Well, there are many other options where you can show us your support!

1. Become a Mentor with us
We want you to LOVE your mentoring experience, that's why we set you up with a child who has similar interests, and in a Mentoring Program that fits your needs. Don't want to commit to 3-4 hours a week for a year? No problem--why not try the In School Mentoring Program and see if it's right for you. Remember: your role as mentor is not to change a child's life, but in most cases, you will be there to listen to them, support them, have fun with them, and be their friend.

2. Join Our Board of Directors
We're always looking for new faces to join our Board. We are currently looking for community-minded individuals from Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock to join our Board with the following experience and interests: Financial, Social Service, Legal, Marketing, Educator, Fundraising/Special Events. Contact our office if you need more information.

3. Volunteer at one of our events
We have many events throughout the year that we need lots of help with! Typically we have our Wing Night in February, our Bowl for Kids Sake in April, our Ride for Kids Sake in September, and our Halloween Party in October. We always have a bunch more of third party events we could use your help with. We're always happy to help high school students looking for their 40 hours of community service.

4. Join a Committee
We're currently looking for people to join committees for the following:

  • Our 40th Anniversary Committee (2016)
  • Our 1st Curl for Kids Sake Committee

5. Donate
There are many ways you can donate to us that we would really appreciate. Here are a few examples:

  • In Kind goods and services to be auctioned/raffled off at our events
  • Goods and Services we can use at the agency
  • Monetary Donations
  • Sponsoring one of our families at Christmas with our Gift Program.

We always appreciate everyone who's involved with us! We really cannot continue to run our programs without the help and support for peoples in our community!  Call us if you're interested at 905-985-3733 ext. 4

SHL 15th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Cheers to 15 years!

Last Friday, all our staff was at Wolf Run Golf Course for the 15th Annual Scugog Men's Hockey League Golf Tournament! This year's 4 beneficiaries were Ride For Dad, Community Care Durham, the Sunshine Centre and Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Durham!

The highlight of this tournament was chair of the Golf Committee, Rob Scott, presenting a faux cheque to the charities that showed that they have given over $200,000 to many local charities over the passed 15 years!

This year alone, they raised $18,000 for the 4 charities!

The 123 golfers included SHL players, as well as their family and friends, who came out to play a round of 18 holes on this picture-perfect day. There was also taste-testing of Carlsberg and Black Fly Beverages and all players left with an awesome goodie-bag from our sponsors!

Thank you so much to everyone involved, including the players, the staff at Wolf Run, the SHL Golf Committee, the volunteers and the sponsors! Can't wait until next year :)
